Designing a more resilient world

For many of us, a severe, global crisis is no longer just the stuff of history books, dystopian fiction or far-flung future speculation; with the worldwide emergence of COVID-19, coping amidst crisis has become a daily reality. It is our hope that the resilience we build today will permeate all aspects of our world tomorrow.

In this first issue of the newly-redesigned Aperture, our goal is to elevate the discussion of what resilience means in our communities. Based on a wealth of in-depth thought leadership from our world-class experts, Aperture presents broad-thinking vignettes of the big ideas that inspire our engineers, creators and innovators to build more adaptive, more resilient solutions.

At WSP, these Future Ready® solutions are an essential component of our design philosophy. We aren’t merely interested in meeting client needs in the short-term; we’re equally inspired by solving tomorrow’s problems, today. In this issue, we consider how to design social connection into the fabric of our sometimes-lonely urban environments; how to build digital resilience into lives lived increasingly online; how to harness the power of renewable energy sources in a more reliable, predictable way; and how to better safeguard our communities and resources against the incredible impacts of extreme weather events.

We invite you to join us in this innovation-rich dialogue about how we can mindfully prepare for and adapt to the challenges we face today, and those that are yet to come. We hope you will enjoy this issue, and reach out to us with your thoughts to continue the conversation.

To a resilient tomorrow,
